Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 vs Snapdragon 888 Plus: What’s different?

In the second half of this year, Qualcomm is expected to launch its Snapdragon 888 Plus, which is set to power the best Android smartphones. Qualcomm isn’t changing many things this year; after all, the Snapdragon 888 is the world’s fastest chipset, and it supports global 5G networks.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus Overview:

Snapdragon 888 II is very similar to the original Snapdragon 888 in terms of architecture and components. Snapdragon’s Prime core can be overclocked once the manufacturing node is mature. A minor performance boost against Snapdragon 865 standard was announced in Snapdragon 865 Plus. As a result, you won’t see much difference in how it performs when using the Snapdragon 888 PPlus.

What’s changed?

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 Plus goes back to its octa-core cores with a 1+3+4 core configuration. There are three Cortex A78, one Cortex X1, and four Cortex A55 cores in that combination. There has been an increase in the speed of the X1 core from 2.84GHz to 2.995GHz. It is designed to improve performance by 5.2% over the standard Snapdragon 888. 

As a result of the improved performance of the AI engine, the total number of TOPS increased from 26 to 32. Snapdragon 888 Plus is able to offer 20% more performance in AI workloads than Hexagon 780 while using the same module.

Unlike previous years’ releases of plus variants, Qualcomm has not upgraded the GPU this time around. Most demanding games behave well on the Snapdragon 888 since the Adreno 660 already runs at extremely high frequencies. As a result, an increase in frequencies would only produce minor changes.

Snapdragon 888 Plus doesn’t change too many things, as Qualcomm doesn’t need to. In order to take advantage of the latest silicon, the chipset will be limited to devices that are aimed at gamers or flagships. On the other hand, if the Snapdragon 865 Plus was any indication last year, you won’t be able to tell any difference between the Snapdragon 888 and the Plus model.

Even those playing the most demanding games will find the performance offered by the Snapdragon 888 to be much more than adequate, so you don’t have to worry if you just bought a phone powered by the chipset. Qualcomm’s latest chipset should start appearing in smartphones by the third quarter. Manufacturers like Motorola, Xiaomi, ASUS, Vivo, and Honor are slated to release smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 888 Plus. It’s not necessary to wait for the Snapdragon 888 phones. All of them come with plenty of features.

Qualcomm-powered smartphones released in the third quarter of this year are being developed by Asus, Xiaomi, Motorola, Vivo, and Honor. It remains to be seen whether the new chipset will improve the performance of the device.
