GoPro HERO 8 Overview
There are currently only two variants of the Hero8 (for now). HERO7 had three variants last year. Let’s talk about its videography chops first, since it’s an action camera.
A new feature of the HERO8 Black is HyperSmooth 2.0. The HyperSmooth tool of last year wasn’t compatible with all resolutions of videos, despite receiving high praise. Nonetheless, HyperSmooth 2.0 works in all resolutions and frame rates, including 8x Slo-Mo. Stabilizing your video can be done in 3 ways: On, High, and Boost, with the latter providing the best results. When your videos are stabilized, minor cropping will be applied.
A new feature called “Horizontal Leveling” also joins the list. Basically, it levels your videos in the horizontal axis, resulting in a smooth cinematic video with visible up-and-down movements. Four digital lenses enable you to take a wide range of photos and videos with the 12MP camera. There are three kinds of lenses – Narrow, Wide, and SuperView. Video frame rate for the HERO8 Black is also affected by the lens type in addition to resolution and aspect ratio. The camera has built-in presets for 3 different types of video recording (Cinematic, Work, and Slo-Mo) so you don’t have to mess with the settings that much.
GoPro’s TimeWarp effect is also improved in the HERO8 Black. As this camera is equipped with TimeWarp 2.0, you can easily slow down or amplify the speed of the video. That’s so cool! Despite the same 3-mic setup as the predecessor, GoPro claims better audio capture. In the HERO8 Black, Live Streaming is now supported at Full-HD (1080p), which was only possible in earlier models.
Let’s talk about photography now. In contrast to videography, there isn’t much to discuss here. With an improved HDR algorithm, GoPro’s SuperPhoto (aka HDR) has become slightly better.
Introducing GoPro’s “LiveBurst” feature. With this feature, you can capture footage for 1.5 seconds before and after shooting (only with the Wide lens). Therefore, you can either choose the best still image from 90 or share a 3-second 4K video as-is. With the HERO8 Black, you can fine-tune your capture’s settings using GoPro’s “Protune” option. You can also take night photos and use the “Burst” feature. The camera’s “SuperView” lens cannot be used to take photos.

GoPro has introduced “Extension Mods” for the HERO8 Black for the first time. There are three mods that can be attached to your camera to extend its functionality.
- Media Mod: Provides two cold shoe mounts, a 3.5mm microphone input, an HDMI output, and an additional USB Type-C port
- Display Mod: Featuring a flip-up 2-inch display for framing the shot, plus an extra 680 mAh battery
- Light Mod: Contains a light source that can be mounted on a GoPro or used by itself
Like all GoPro HERO cameras, the HERO8 Black is waterproof. You can only go up to 33 ft (10 m) in this area. A 2x stronger lens and tough build quality are among the features of the HERO8 that make it more durable in tough and demanding scenarios, according to the company.
It also comes with a 1220 mAh battery and the same GP1 SoC. It is through the use of a new battery that the HERO8 can offer HyperSmooth 2.0, even though the capacity of the HERO8 battery is the same as the HERO7.
Besides sharing your photos and videos, you can also view, edit, customise and edit them using the companion app. On the newer model, the only compromise is that HDMI output is only available with the Media mod.
